What Is Ballroom Dancing?

A large room used for dancing may be called a ballroom but not all dancing in a ballroom is Ballroom dancing.
Ballroom Dancing is a form of dancing Which follows a format and style laid down many years ago.  It has five dance  styles known as  Waltz Foxtrot Quickstep Tango and Viennese Waltz.  These dances have their own set rhythms and are made up of small units called  figures.  The figures are put together in an order which is not predetermined. The order  will vary each time the dance is performed and is led by the man and followed by the lady.      Each dance should be creative and spontaneous.  Man and lady move as one, while physically in contact with each other, in a three dimensional pattern around a dance floor.
Their  Bodies should be touching front to front
Ballroom Dancing is not to be confused with old time dancing or modern sequence dancing which are forms of dance in their own right.
Old time dancing is a traditional form of dance performed by couples dancing without body contact in a set sequence of  figures in a circle around the dance floor.  All couples dance the same sequence of steps at the same time. In effect every body on the dance floor is dancing with each other.  Old time has it's own figures.
Similarly Modern sequence has every body dancing the same steps at the same time however there should be body contact and the figures should be taken from Ballroom Dancing.  Old Time And Modern Sequence dancers are more than welcome to use this site.
The beauty of Ballroom Dancing is that two people can move as one, unrestricted artistically and rhythmically, in sympathy with music , in a creative and traditional style.  It's  Beautiful to watch and heaven to dance.  From my point of view if the lady is a competent dancer it's like dancing in the clouds with a snowflake.
Ballroom dancing is a social skill which enables people to mix socially and relate on the same level.  It cuts straight through the boundaries of religion, politics, nationality, and even language.  It's an excellent way to make new friends.  unfortunately very few people have the true skills of a Ballroom Dancer.
There are people out there who can't read this because they don't speak the English language yet they could dance beautifully with me because we both speak the language of dance.  It's only competitor in that respect is the language of love.
